Belalp – Riederalp Suspension Bridge

Hängebrücke

Hängebrücke

For many years, the hiking trail Belalp – Riederalp led across the Aletsch Glacier. This crossing served not only as a hiking trail over the last years, but primarily for accessing the lower alp on the side of the Riederalp, and to get to the Innere Aletschji from the Belalp. Until the mid 1970’s this route was still being actively used, although metal ladders and steel cables had already been installed. Evidence from this time can still be found. Due to the continual process of climate change, and the resulting dramatic glacial retreat of up to 25 m each year, a crossing in that place has become impossible. Thanks to the new suspension bridge, there is a new connecting path between the Belalp and the Riederalp. The hike takes around 5 hours. Here you can find more information about the 125 m long Suspension Bridge.
