Saffron museum

A museum housed in a museum. The ‘Zehndenstadel’ barn was built in 1437 and is one of Switzerland’s oldest wooden buildings. The museum puts on display saffron farming from the hard labour in the field to the culinary speciality on the plate. Museum visitors learn about how saffron is grown and harvested and the special equipment needed.

The uniqueness of saffron cultivation in Mund

Mund is the only place in Switzerland where this precious spice is still grown according to centuries-old tradition. Some 18,000 square metres of the prized “Crocus Sativus” is grown on a stunning, sunny high plateau. It is difficult to imagine how much hard work and patience is required for every single saffron blossom.

Interesting facts

Between 30 and 1,000 flowers are picked per day during the harvest months of October and November. The stigmas are then plucked from the blossoms and the prized spice is born. Mund’s saffron guild painstakingly produces between one and four kilograms of saffron every year. It becomes clear why everyone is running after Mund’s “red gold”.
