Mund
The saffron village of Mund is known for its saffron production and its charming atmosphere. Mund is a small village surrounded by rolling hills, green meadows and majestic mountains. It is an idyllic setting for nature lovers.
The main reason for Mund's fame is saffron, which has been grown here for centuries. The climate and soil conditions of the Valais provide ideal conditions for growing this precious spice plant. The fields of flowers are a breathtaking sight in autumn and attract visitors from all over the world.
In Mund itself, you can experience the entire saffron production chain up close. From the cultivation of the saffron crocus to the harvesting and drying of the precious threads to the processing into various products, there is much to discover. You can take part in guided tours to learn more about saffron cultivation and even purchase saffron products to take home the flavours of this unique spice.
The Saffron Village is a place that combines history, nature and pleasure. It is a place where you can experience the magic of saffron and enjoy the beauty of the Swiss Alps.
Saffron
Saffron is one of the most expensive and sought-after spice plants in the world. It is extracted from the dried stigmas of the saffron crocus flower "Crocus sativus". This grows in Mund on an area of around 18,000 square metres on the beautiful and sunny high plateau. Between 30 and 1,000 flowers are harvested daily during the season in October and November. Each flower produces only three pistillate filaments, which have to be carefully harvested by hand. This elaborate process explains the high price of saffron. Every year, the Munder saffron guild produces between one and four kilos of saffron in painstaking manual work. No wonder, then, that everyone is clamouring for the "red gold" from the mouth.
