Tyndall snowshoe trail

closed
  • start: Belalp cable-car summit station
  • destination: Hohbiel

The starting point of this snowshoe trail is the mountain station of the cable car on Belalp. First follow the path up to Bruchegg. Beware: snow sports enthusiasts will come towards you here.

Continue along the signposted route to the Tyndall monument. The monument is dedicated to the Irish physicist John Tyndall (1820-1893) and was commissioned by his wife Louisa Charlotte.

It is worth marvelling at the panorama of the Valais mountains from here and enjoying the view of the Great Aletsch Glacier. You can also see the historic Hotel Belalp from here. The mountain hotel was opened in 1858 and at that time mainly welcomed guests from England.

The trail continues via a rather challenging but safe ascent to Hohbiel. The descent follows the same route. Alternatively, you can take the Sparrhorn chairlift down.
