100 years Brig – Gletsch

100 years ago, on 30 June 1914, the Brig – Gletsch railway line of the former Furka – Oberalp Railways was officially opened. It truly was a pioneering effort, which will be honoured on the 100 year anniversary. Together with the Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway, the tourism organisations along the railway line, and a range of other partners, the Materhorn Gotthard Bahn will be celebrating the 100th anniversary during the summer of 2014.

We will be celebrating, too.

Unique Steam Trains

After the line’s electrification in 1941/42, the operations of the coal-fired locomotives were limited to rare special and service trips. Today, only four Furka-Steam Locomotives are restored to their original condition and operational. The anniversary provides a unique opportunity to ride on the historic steam locomotives between Brig and Goms, just like in 1914. In August, you will be able to admire all four 100 year old steam locomotives type HG 3/4 in active operation as a special attraction.

The following steam locomotive rides are offered:

  • 29 June 2014: Brig – Mörel – Brig
  • regular rides with ticket sales on the spot
  • single trips (advance booking with reserved seats from 21 march 2014)
  • 13 August 2014: Obwerwald – Brig
  • 14 August 2014: Brig – Oberwald and Oberwald – Brig
  • 15 August 2014: Brig – Oberwald – Gletsch
  • 15 – 17 August 2014: Oberwald – Reckingen – Oberwald and Oberwald – Gletsch, or Gletsch – Oberwald
  • regular trips with ticket sales on the spot

Ticket sales for steam locomotive trips on the routes between Brig and Oberwald, or Gletsch start on 21 March 2014, at 09:00. You can book tickets at the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn RailCenter at 0848 642 442.

The Anniversary Express
Exclusively for the anniversary, the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn offers an Anniversary Express from Andermatt to Zermatt, and to the Gornergrat between 01 – 17 August 2014.
