Protected from the wind and weather, Nesselalp lies in a hollow in the terrain. The centrepiece of the settlement is the Maria zum Schnee chapel, which is enthroned on a rocky ridge.
The dilapidated chapel, originally mentioned in a document in 1759, was replaced in 1953/54 by the current version with solid exposed quarrystone masonry after countless hours of labour were spent rebuilding it.
The chapel faces west with its choir overlooking an impressive panorama of the Mischabel, Matterhorn and Weisshorn. Inside there is a beautiful altar, which alone is worth a visit to Nesselalp. The chapel festival is celebrated here every year on the first Sunday in August.
The chapel can be reached from both Belalp and Birgisch.
