The Gibidum reservoir was commissioned in 1969.

The Gibidum reservoir was first filled in 1969 after five years of construction. Its capacity is approximately 8.8 million cubic metres of water and the arch dam is 120 metres high. The maximum depth of the reservoir is 104 metres and it covers an area of 21 hectares.

Melt water and sediment

It is fed by melt water from the Great Aletsch Glacier and other mountain streams. The special feature of the Gibidum reservoir is that around 65% of its catchment area is glaciated. The water is therefore rich in sediment, which leads to severe wear and tear on the turbine wheels of the power plant. For this reason, the entire reservoir is flushed annually. Production is interrupted for two to three days for this purpose.

Adventure above the Gibidum reservoir

For those who like a more adventurous experience, we recommend the secured circumnavigation of the reservoir. The via ferrata leads around 3.5 kilometres and features dizzying climbing passages. An 80 metre long and 40 metre high Nepal suspension bridge also awaits you as a special thrill.
