The saffron village

Mund

Welcome to Mund

Known for its precious spice of saffron, also called "red gold".

The saffron village of Mund is the only place in Switzerland where precious saffron is still planted today. The precious spice of saffron, the precious "Crocus sativus", grows on an area of about 18'000 square meters on the beautiful and sunny high plateau. Up to 3'000 flowers are harvested daily in season during October and November. The spice is extracted from the pistils of their flowers. Every year, the Munder saffron guild produces between one and four kilos of saffron in painstaking manual labor.
