The Bitschji is one of the most beautiful climbing areas in the Valais.

The climbing area was discovered by chance by Mario and Adrian Trapletti and developed between 1989 and 1991. It is located in a wooded valley and the rocks are rough, textured rock. The climbing area offers varied, mostly athletic climbing on ledges.

It is an ideal summer climbing area because the fir forest and the north-west orientation of the rocks ensure pleasantly cool temperatures.

Directions

About 100m below the car park in Geimen, a hiking trail branches off in the direction of Bitschji, Trämul. Follow this until you are above Bitschji Lake. You now walk northwards over the rocks until you reach a small path. The path leads over an irrigation channel to a valley. The first sector is right at the entrance to the valley. The other sectors are accessible via a narrow and steep, but not dangerous mountain path.

Equipment

Safety guidelines

Even if it looks so tempting in films: Rock climbing in nature is not for greenhorns. In addition to suitable equipment and strength, you need sound training and practice in belaying techniques. Because if you are properly secured, serious accidents hardly ever happen when rock climbing.

The 5 most important tips:

  • Learn belaying techniques and never let go of the brake rope when belaying.
  • Question the belaying behaviour of your rope partner and address mistakes.
  • Check your partner - pay special attention to knots
  • Check commands and signs beforehand
  • Wear a helmet, take off finger rings
