- Start: Aletschbord, Belalp
- Destination: Tyndall Memorial, Belalp
The snowshoe trail begins at Aletschbord. Already here you can enjoy a unique view of the Great Aletsch Glacier. The ascent passes the Villa Tyndall (built 1877) and leads up to the Tyndall Memorial (2351 m. above sea level), which is dedicated to the Irish scientist John Tyndall.
The inscription reads:
"Raised to her all beloved by Luisa his wife to mark a place of memories."
"Erected by Luisa for her beloved husband to mark this place of remembrance."
The deep affection for her husband, the guilt feelings over his tragic end, and the connection with Belalp and its inhabitants were likely the motives for the stone memorial. John Tyndall (1820-1893) was an Irish physicist and mountaineer. From 1861 until his death he spent summers in the Swiss Alps, mainly at his favorite place, Belalp.
