Discover the pilgrimage chapel in Gstein on this circular hike and experience the mysterious attraction of this secluded place.

The circular hike starts in the Safrand village of Mund and leads via the hamlet of Warbflie to the grotto chapel in Gstein.

The chapel is hidden under a mighty, flat protruding boulder. An eight-metre-high wooden cross on the boulder draws attention to the chapel of grace. It commemorates an apparition of Our Lady in 1857, an event that attracted a steady stream of pilgrims, so that a first chapel was built between 1885 and 1887. In 1983/1984, the old chapel was demolished and a new grotto chapel was built. The rock on which the alleged apparition was seen now forms the protective roof. Experience the irresistible and mysterious attraction of this secluded place.

Directions

The hike starts in Mund at the post office stop. Cross the road and follow the signs towards Warbflie. At the next road, follow its course through the hamlet of Warbflie and continue to the end of the road. From here, the path leads you directly to the chapel in Gstein.

For the way back, follow the path down until you cross the BLS tracks. Now walk along the tracks for a short moment before crossing the BLS tracks again and starting the ascent to Mund. At the hamlet of Unner Warbflie you reach a road, from which the hiking trail branches off shortly afterwards to the left up to Mund. After crossing the road again, the trail continues and you will soon reach your starting point again.

Safety guidelines

Despite the "impossible to miss" marking of the hiking trails, we recommend for safety reasons to always have an appropriate hiking map with you so that you can quickly find your way to a safe area in case of a thunderstorm or emergency, for example.

Especially in autumn, you should also be aware that leaves lying on the ground can hide bumps, roots, stones or holes in the path. After storms, trees can still fall over or branches can fall down. Especially in adverse weather conditions, muddy and slippery passages can occur on natural paths. You have to expect this kind of damage to paths when you go on a hike.

Not all rocks or precipices are secured with ropes or railings. In some cases surefootedness is required. If you are of the opinion that certain sections of the trail are not passable for you, you should avoid them.
