Discover on this circular hike the pilgrimage chapel in Gstein and experience the mysterious attraction of this secluded place.

The circular hike starts in the saffron village of Mund and leads via the hamlet of Warbflie to the grotto chapel in Gstein.

The chapel lies hidden under a massive, flat overhanging rock. On the rock, an eight-meter-high wooden cross draws attention to the chapel of grace. It commemorates a Marian apparition in 1857. This event continuously attracted pilgrims, so that between 1885 and 1887 a first chapel was built. In 1983/1984 the old chapel was demolished and a new grotto chapel was built. The rock on which the alleged apparition was seen today forms the protective roof. Experience the irresistible and mysterious attraction of this secluded place.

Directions

The hike starts in Mund at the post bus stop. Cross the road and follow the signs towards Warbflie. At the next road, follow its course, pass through the hamlet of Warbflie, and continue to the end of the road. From here the path leads directly to the chapel in Gstein.

For the return journey, follow the path downhill until you cross the BLS tracks. Then walk along the tracks for a short moment before crossing the BLS tracks again and starting the ascent back to Mund. At the hamlet of Unner Warbflie, you reach a road from which a hiking trail branches off to the left up to Mund shortly afterward. After crossing the road once more, the path continues and you will soon arrive back at your starting point.

Safety guidelines

Despite the "unmissable" marking of the hiking trails, for safety reasons we always recommend carrying a suitable hiking map so that, for example, in case of a thunderstorm or emergency you can quickly find a safe area.

Especially in autumn, attention must also be paid to the fact that fallen leaves can cover unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. After storms, trees may still fall or branches may drop. Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can have muddy and slippery sections. You must expect such path impairments when undertaking a hike.

Not all rocks or cliffs are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is sometimes required. If you feel certain path sections are not passable for you, you should avoid them.
